The most famous lords of Riccione belonged to the Agolanti family. This noble family from Florence flocked here in 1260, when it was sent into exile from the Tuscan city.

Situated on the top of the hills of Riccione, their castle has recently been restored and is now the venue for many cultural events and exhibitions. During its golden age, the noble family welcomed many important personalities, such as Queen Christina of Swabia, who stopped here on her way to Rome.

Many members of the Agolanti family played fundamental roles in the administration of the city of Rimini during the XIVth century and this constituted a great opportunity to strike up important relationships with the most important families of that age, such as the Malatesta one.

The Agolanti family, who owned several palaces in the area surrounding Rimini, uses their castle as the vacation home where they periodically flock to check their properties and implement farming developments.

Throughout the centuries, the castle was acquired by other families before being seriously damaged by the earthquake which occurred in 1786; it was later turned into a farmhouse and then sold to the Municipality of Riccione by the Verni familiy in 1982.
